MIKEMIKE
For employers & organisations

The business case for supporting mental health at work.

Poor mental health already costs UK employers tens of billions every year — and the research shows that support pays for itself. Here is the evidence, and how MIKE Circle helps organisations offer it well.

Where the £51bn goes

Presenteeism is the single largest cost — not absence.

People showing up but unable to work at capacity costs UK employers more than sickness absence and staff turnover combined. Deloitte's 2024 breakdown of the £51bn annual total:

£24bn
£20bn
£7bn
Presenteeism — £24bn Staff turnover — £20bn Absenteeism — £7bn

On top of that £51bn, Deloitte estimates a further £8bn a year is lost to the impact of parents' concern about their children's mental health on their own work.

Source: Deloitte, "Mental health and employers: the case for investment" (2024). The £51bn figure is down from £55bn in 2021 but still up from £45bn in 2019.

Return on investment

Support pays for itself — on average £4.70 back per £1 spent.

Deloitte's research shows the return varies significantly by the type of intervention. Prevention consistently outperforms reacting after the fact.

Intervention typeReturn per £1
Universal / preventative culture & awareness£6.30
Targeted screening interventions£5.90
Proactive early-stage support£5.10
Average across all interventions£4.70
Reactive support only£3.40

Admins never see individual conversations, Diary entries or profile data — only participation, and what each person chooses to share.

Illustrative example of a MIKE Circle admin view — names, departments and figures are fictional, not a real organisation's data.

Private by default

Conversations and Diary entries stay private unless the individual chooses to share.

Consent-led, always

Nothing is visible to an organisation without the individual's explicit permission.

Safety never paywalled

Urgent and crisis-support routes are always free, for every user.

Built around trust

Designed with permission, transparency and minimum-necessary data use throughout.

MIKE is not a medical or occupational-health service. MIKE Circle supports wellbeing engagement and general signposting; it does not diagnose, treat or replace occupational health, HR investigation processes, therapists or emergency services.
